Sorry to say but this is just one aspect of dropping out of all climate contracts national, international and global. And yes, AI is making this much worse.
“Hyperscale data centers are the really large data centers that are being built now for [generative] AI, which is really driving a lot of the growth in this sector because it requires vast data processing capabilities,” said Volzer. “The trend is larger and bigger centers to feed this demand for AI.”
Much of the water used in data centers never gets back into the watershed, particularly if the data center uses a method called evaporative cooling.
Think about that the next time you “ask ChatGPT” something.
Just one more reason not to use servers located in the USA for anything.
And they’re running into issues due to increasingly ingesting AI-generated data.
There we go. Who coulda seen that coming! While that’s going to be a fun ride, at the same time companies all but mandate AS* to their employees.
Both are good 👍

Thank You! Yes!
So … A-not-I? AD? What do we call it? LLM seems too specialised?
True; I just hate headlines that ask stupid questions.
But then again, there’s always the premise that it could work, in such attempts, which annoys me no less.
No need to wait for Linux to listen to internet radio. With individual song metadata. Soma.fm. Bagel Radio for guitary stuff. 9128.live for amazing Ambient mixes.
There’s also NTS.live, Lyl Radio, Dublab etc… but they don’t always show per-track metadata.
Or right here on Fediverse. Just search for Music communities. I already found a few new artists here.
Another vote for internet radio. Adding Bagel Radio for guitary stuff. Oh and 9128.live for amazing Ambient mixes.
One of the problems with Linux today on laptops is that the CPU will run in an unoptimized manner
Is this actually still true? I thought automatic scaling happens mostly on firmware level these days.
Updating databases to support anything other than that which would run on a 1970s mainframe costs the sort of money that eats into C-level’s yacht funds, so it won’t happen.
Even so, multiple strategies to include unicode characters in ASCII exist. *sigh*
Anybody who thought the answer could have been even remotely close to Yes is delusional.
Thank you for your patience.
Everything is public, including votes.
I have yet to figure out how that works. Does Lemmy offer a way to look at these things? Like who voted?
Instance admins can notice if a lot of signups happen from a specific ip, email pattern or region.
The same goes for, say, reddit admins.
Writing good code does not excuse you from being an arsehole. I’m glad most of the FOSS community has moved on from sheer meritocracy. In the end such behaviour will always also affect the software.
Unfortunately that is not the point this article is making. At all.
if you buy a regular phone and donate €5, you will have done more
I question if donations work that way. And you still bought one more device that’s made on the backs of disenfranchised people. (Again, not saying that a Fairphone eliminates that 100%, but a little)
In the end you are annoyed at the brand name plus the higher price evoking larger expectations in some of your friends. Join the club. But that’s a far cry from your original statement. Glad we could clear that up.
open source and AI
I resent that these two terms are used interchangeably throughout the whole article. WT actual F.
Of course there’s also this:
calculating the economic value
I think I don’t llike the Linux foundation anymore. Not that I ever like-liked it. I hope they fire this unperson.
Helped? As in, they’re not doing it anymore? Color me skeptical. But I’m going to read the article now.
edit: Ok it’s about the specific latest waves of videos justifying the attack on Iran. As if Israel hasn’t been engaging in Russian-style disinformation for decades. With the help of big G and others.
That’s so diametrically opposed to the truth, it’s cynical. I hope Google gets what it deserves for allowing that. Not to speak of Israel.
And this is so vastly exaggerated, it’s fearmongering. It’s “Iraq has weapons of mass destruction” all over again. And even if, why would they want to attack Europe? It makes no sense. We’re not the enemy.
