science@lemmy.world•Cows Can Use Tools. Are We Underestimating How Smart They Are?English
1·5 days agoI think you should not be allowed to breed someone into existence when you have the date of their murder already in your calendar.
Well, that’s how we differ. All emotionally charged language aside, I’d rather see animals see some life than no life at all.
Besides, with the way you put it, this looks less and less like a genuine wish to unpack my views and more like an attempt to debate it.
I believe that we can and should make farming practices better, making a better life for these animals. And I think that, even with the views you have, you will agree it would at least be better than what we currently see.

science@lemmy.world•Cows Can Use Tools. Are We Underestimating How Smart They Are?English
1·5 days agoSure!
First off, it’s not that these animals would live otherwise. They can’t survive in the wild, the only reason they exist at all at this scale is because there is an economic incentive to keep them - namely, meat, eggs, milk etc. Would you rather have them live a short live or not even be born because their parents died in the wild?
Second, perfect is the enemy of the good. Most people won’t stop eating meat no matter what you tell them, so, regardless of your stance, a push for more ethical farming is beneficial.

Because the uses for a never-changing site are quite limited.

science@lemmy.world•Cows Can Use Tools. Are We Underestimating How Smart They Are?English
6·8 days agoWhat we know for certain is that plants don’t have centralized decision making place or a nervous system. Their reactions are autonomous on the level of specific tissues.
They don’t feel any pain, either. They can react to damage, but it’s just a mechanical automation.
Plants are not conscious.

science@lemmy.world•Cows Can Use Tools. Are We Underestimating How Smart They Are?English
61·8 days agoAt the very least, we can start by not putting them into terrible crammed conditions and not using the most brutal slaughter practices.
Doing all that doesn’t actually increase the price more than 30% - but this difference makes farmers go crazy doing all sorts of disgusting things.
Besides, a price bump could reduce the meat consumption somewhat.

Opensource@programming.dev•New Roblox alternative(?) in development: Okutu - uses Godot for game development and ActivityPub for federation
5·13 days agoFederated games? Is it like servers talking to each other to show each other on the list, in this case?
yt-dlp is amazing, but not everyone likes to use CLI tools (and, looking down the thread, not everyone prefers native packets as they may cause dependency issues and need extra tools for permissions control).
Even in a geeky Linux space, many people just want to push a button in a nice interface and get what they want. This app provides just that.
Abandon elitism, embrace variety. And use the tools you prefer - after all, plenty of Linux video/music downloaders have yt-dlp under the hood, and I use it on a regular.

Solarpunk technology@slrpnk.net•Goodbye to the idea that solar panels “die” after 25 years. A new study says the warranty does not mark the end, and real-world performance can last for decades
3·13 days agoSure! That’s why I talk it might be critical for rooftop, but maybe useful somewhere else.
I’m pretty certain it may make economic sense to install something like this in a large open area. If the panels were meant to be thrown away, the price must be tiny.
Anyhow, I expect this to be more common once the mass-produced solar of the last decade gets old. We may just not be there yet to have plenty of used solar to offer.

26·13 days agoI wish we could still install the old panels somewhere. They might not be good enough to be rooftop solar anymore, but in the field, why not take all they can still give?

Technology@lemmy.ml•China and Russia dominate nuclear power push with 90% of new reactors
2·16 days agoAustralia has plenty of insolation and most power consumers are packed densely enough not to worry about the upkeep of large grids.
Aside from uranium, we also have a much more plentiful thorium to use as a fission fuel. We definitely are not running out of that. But, thorium power plants can be more expensive, and byproducts of thorium cycle are less valuable, so it’s worth comparing that to running a renewables-based grid again.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is anyone making a frontend player for the music Anna recently archived from Spotify?
4·17 days agoAnna’s Archive is the world’s largest collection of pirated books, scientific papers and more. Recently they turned to pirating music as well, starting by dumping 86 million tracks from Spotify.
All of the scraped content is available in the form of BitTorrent shares, so you can always download parts of it and spread them further.
The OP wants a convenient way to access this collection and play music from it.
Crusts like this generally require a lot of steam in the oven
Fair enough!
And shaping/forming a loaf that stays tall when being baked on a flat surface takes skill, lots of practice and experience.
Or a fairly inexpensive machine that will do it for you. Of course though, there’s a special pleasure in making a truly artisan bread with your own hands. But hey, it’s not that hard if you know what you’re doing. Best to see it in action.
But then again, I speak from the side of low-scale industrial baking. For a home baker, all this machinery will be an overkill.

Technology@lemmy.ml•China and Russia dominate nuclear power push with 90% of new reactors
5·17 days agoNuclear power is non-intermittent and can be used pretty much anywhere. With a push for small-scale reactors, there’s a good chance for smaller places to get their own nuclear power plant, reducing stress on the national grid, and for power plants to be constructed in a much shorter timeframe.
Also, both Russia and China have floating nuclear power plants that can be transported to regions with water access on demand.
Solar and wind are cool, and quite cheap by themselves, but energy storage is a massive and expensive headache and limited placement options mean the grid should be robust enough to accommodate them with minimal power losses.
Ready to be killed, I guess
