I feel a fundamental problem is the ephemeral post model. If one isn’t actively contributing frequently it’s effectively the same as not being part of the community at all.

Seeing lots of familiar faces in threads, even if they didn’t post today, helped.

With regards to your point though, I think it’s one of the reasons I’m not fussed about getting “everyone” onto a single platform. It’s too many people!

I’m honestly not sure this is a bad thing. Dear God, remember how threads would get blown out by hyper-configurations? Sig blocks that were 20,000 pixels long and endless GIF spam? Not sure I’m in a hurry to get back to that!

Honestly, no, none of the forums I ever used allowed that sort of things for, well, for obvious reasons!

Anyway, my reasoning for this is to help make it easier to mentally anchor a given interaction to a user. On things like Lemmy and Reddit I feel like it’s a constant sea of random usernames - there’s no persistence or community. I could well have spoken to the same person multiple times but I don’t notice because they’re so anonymous.

Being designed around persistent topics rather than the ephemeral post model and more visible user customisation (more prominent avatars, signatures, that sort of thing).

Something I was hopeful for but seems to have died is lemmyBB. A phpBB-style front-end to Lemmy. I’d like the accessibility of being able to use an existing account that federation brings but the forum-style approach that phpBB has.

Mostly though I’ve been disappointed in the teens and twenty-somethings. They seem to have, in distressingly large numbers, just opted to go along with whatever they’re encouraged to use by large platform holders. There doesn’t seem to be an appetite to create communities and define spaces that they control. Perhaps that’s just me getting old though…

I tried to research my current workplace and found nothing useful about it. These days I’ve no idea how anyone we’d interview would find out about the niche software we work on. I’ve just taken a look at our website and it would not help even a little (who writes this drivel?).

I have similar questions when YouTubers say the old “don’t forget to ring that bell” and the like. What on Earth would I need notifications for? It’s on-demand video! The whole point is that it waits for me!

I tend to use things like Pixelfed to find people interested in the same hobbies. Mastodon I use more for general nerding out.

I wasn’t intending to criticise your use-case. I don’t know what normal usage patterns look like.

That sounds lovely but it’s not been my experience of using social media (except Facebook). I’m not suggesting my experience is normal, or that yours is. I genuinely don’t know.

Monolithic as in Twitter, Reddit, Facebook - platforms that do not federate.

Plus I’m yet to run into a single person I actually know IRL on the fedi.

Is that a normal metric for monolithic social media?

They’re a tad bigger than that (100 GB per disc), and I’ve lost enough hard disks over the years to not want to have to deal with backing up files that big. Not when I can have a small collection of shelf stable discs that won’t suffer mechanical failure short of deliberate damage.

Anyway, you can disagree all you like. If it’s not inconvenient for you, excellent, but for me it is. Hard disks sit in the back of my mind as ticking time bombs that I need to keep an eye on if I want to trust them. Ugh, I’ve done enough of that in my life. So many dodgy disks!

Oh and that also assumes a load of infrastructure in my home that I don’t have. I know how to set it up, but I don’t want to. Been there, done that. I’d rather check the second hand UHD shelf at CEX and pick up the occasional disc when the price isn’t silly.

Of course, eventually my UHDs will decay, but the timescale is decades rather than years.

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology. The most basic speaker setup for it is 5.1.2: 5 = front left and right, centre, rear left and right 1 = subwoofer (bass box) 2 = ceiling speakers

So a soundbar - a single block sat in the centre below the screen - claiming to do immersive surround sound is up there with gold-plated fibreoptic leads.

I’m always tickled when I see soundbars that ostensibly support Dolby Atmos.
