  • Lemmy is disproportionately made up of Linux users and I think many of us appreciate how much simpler and easier Steam (or the work of Steam) has made gaming for us or people we know. Also, I think it’s a bit of a misconception on your part that because we have some level of interest in piracy we must therefore be stoutly against anything which appears to conflict with that. I pirate because it’s a way to save money and, sometimes, a better service too, but I’m not an activist or evangelical in my support for it. Piracy is never going to be the solution for everyone and having some simpler and less intimidating alternatives out there is a good thing, even if they are far from perfect and could deteriorate at some point in the future.

  • Yes, in my experience it is almost impossible to get normal people to move away from big tech. The only person I’ve successfully managed to convince is my partner, and that’s because she’s so lazy/disinterested when it comes to technology that she’s very willing to let me setup and manage everything for her. Of course, just like me, she is still stuck with big tech when it comes to communicating with everyone else.

  • This poses an active danger. We are visual creatures. It will cause distraction.

We are way past that point. Cars have had massive, phone shaped touch screens in them for years. Every year, more and more of the cabin controls are moved from physical buttons and knobs, that you can operate and adjust without taking your eyes off the road, to settings hidden behind multiple layers of menus on the gigantic touch screen. In some cars you can’t even change the direction of the air conditioning without accessing the touch screen.

  • because you disagree on one person’s political viewpoints on immigration

That’s a very mild way of saying that the political party he donates to supports ethnic cleansing. These are direct quotes from its leader:

In a debate hosted by Studio3 with Liberal member of parliament Martin Melin, Allard asked: “why won’t the Liberals push for deporting 100 000 social welfare-Somalis?” and in the same debate said that “Sweden belongs to the Swedes. We have to make sure that we take care of our own damn people and we must deport these damn parasites who sit and live at our expense.”

In a podcast segment about immigration and deportations Allard stated his opinion and said that "They will also be forced to leave, even if they are born in Sweden, because they have no natural connection to Sweden. They are not Swedish.

  • Okay self hosting means you use an old laptop or raspberry Pi to run a server with all the movies and TV series and stuff right?

You don’t have to have a second PC, although that is the most common method. My Raspberry Pi 4 is not powerful enough for the quality I watch at so I use it as a Navidrome server for music and have Jellyfin running on my main PC instead. Ideally, I would have another mini PC for Jellyfin but my setup still works fine currently. It’s just a bit clumsier and uses more power.

My question is, how do you get these movies and TV series and stuff if you self host?

Through P2P file sharing like torrenting.
