Actually I had Windows games running smoother on Linux. Windows has become so extremely bloated, and the translation layer has become more optimized.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which directories should I back up in Windows before moving to Linux?
5·1 month agoBest option is a new seperate drive of course.
But besides that I can recommend making a image of the drive ans storing it somewhere. This way you can flash everything back, there would be a ton of applications that would not run if you try and restore the files only.
Last option should be to customly copy files from folders around. This would not guarantee you can restore Windows. But you maybe would be able to restore config at a much lower storage amount

3·2 months agoI bough a second hand laptop with windows 11 and it had Copilot pushing down my throat.
It’s now running Fedora just fine. And if I want I can spin up a local AI when I decide that I need it.
There is a windows registry hack to set the shutdown wait time for 1s and that did fix it for me. But every update they turn it back to unlimited.
(I ended up installing Linux, I only have the dnf5daemon server holding the shutdown up for atnost 5min now. But I haven’t tried to fix it)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why can't countries with vast deserts make solar farms to power the world?
59·6 months agoSome reasons to be discouraged making a solar farm in a desert:
- Middle of nowhere, you need to transport all the hardware to the place
- Maintanace, you need people on-site to support it
- Desert sand is sandbladting your panels
- (and this is the biggest one I think). You need to transport the power from where its generated to where is requested. Which is an imperfect proces, and every time you double the distance you also double the resistance
Back in the good old days when carrier lock was still allowed. They flashed a Rom (Software) on the phone to lock you in. I don’t know if they still do it this way, but a new ROM would get around that
