Malicious Compliance@lemmy.world•Work from homeEnglish
1·2 years agoI’d love to honestly believe that. But I still wouldn’t risk ever doing a BYOD with a company that forced me to install anything on my personal devices.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Junior dev VS FAANMG dev
471·2 years agoBoth sides.
I constantly call out juniors who do things like ignore warnings, completely unaware that the warning is going to cause serious tech debt in a few months.
But Ive also unfortunately shrugged after seeing hundreds of warnings because to update this requires me to go through 3 layers of departments and we’re still waiting on these six other blockers.
Pick and choose I guess.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Cloudflare's recent blog regarding polyfill shows that Cloudflare never authorized Polyfill to use their name in their product
17·2 years agoWhenever I see those “All the companies that use us” banner, I shrug.
If I was a scammer, why wouldn’t I include a dozen companies?

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•A new survey found that almost 40% of companies posted a fake job listing this year (2024)
20·2 years agoFelt like when I was job hunting around 2019, 80% of job applications I filled out didn’t even feel real. No reply back. Weird hoops to jump. Submit a resume then fill it out again.

5·2 years agoI keep hearing like they didn’t really do shit. When Uber did a fuckton.
1 - Reputation. If a taxi driver was a racist POS, literally nothing I can do.
2 - Agreed upon fare. You literally see a estimate of the cost. I had a taxi add extra fees the moment I sat in the car.
3 - GPS. The route on your phone is the same route they follow. How many times have taxis went on a fucking joyride to rank up more money?
4 - See when the ride is coming. “Cab will be there in 15-45 mins.” Never fucking shows up.
5 - Automatic payment. How many fucking CC machines didn’t work so they forced you to pay cash?
I can go on and on.
But to say some tech bro slapped some tech jargon onto taxis and became rich is disingenuous to all the innovations they’ve done to unfuck the taxi industry.

2·2 years agoWait what?
Your culture doesn’t tip taxi drivers?
I constantly felt like if I didn’t tip the taxi driver, he’d drive in reverse and tell me to fuck off. Because yes they were that kind of asshole.

99·2 years agoI’m a brown dude. I have so many stories about bad taxi experiences. From Taxi drivers refusing to pick me up, to them going, “You’re lucky to be in my car”, to “I’m not driving there. Get out.”
Around 2017 and was very upset at Uber, I took a taxi from the airport. The guy refused to drive until we had more people in the car. I said this wasn’t a car share, and he told me to go take a bus. When I started getting a Uber, he apologized and took me, but then bitched about it the whole drive that he was losing money.
Uber and Lyft changed it all.
Cleaner cars. No attitudes. Agreed upon destination and fair.
I have no sympathy for taxis.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Elon Musk's X revenue has officially plummeted, new documents show
231·2 years agoThe moment Musk fired engineers, I removed my account. Then I watched Twitter integration fail for a few applications Ive worked on, and removed that login/access.
From there, I watched multiple services fail. Ive watched spam bots take over. I watched drama after drama, Musk demanding weird choices like his tweets get priority.
It’s such a mess.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Nextcloud or Syncthing - which one do you suggest?English
5·2 years agoThe maintenance part crushed me. Most of my other self hosted home setup, I fiddle with at most 2-3 times a year. Next cloud, I logging in at least once a month because something wasn’t working.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Nextcloud or Syncthing - which one do you suggest?English
4·2 years agoThanks for sharing that. My job set up NextCloud for cloud sharing and I thought it was pretty cool. Tried to set it up at home for sharing on a home network with my family and felt really confused. Every week there was a new problem that I had to solve and ended up going back just network drives and sharing.

8·2 years agoI know I’m preaching to the choir but for the people interviewing for their first software gig
First software gig? In this market, take whatever to get experience imo.
But that second/third/etc job? Culture, then salary, then everything else. Last interview I went to bragged about giving everyone brand new sneakers yet pay $25k less than average.

Programming@programming.dev•The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
26·2 years agoThe difference between experienced devs and non experienced devs is that we have hundreds of stories like that under our belt. Hundreds of “Ah I wasted all this time because of a typo”, and now we know to check for it.
It never stops. And after a while, a dev will share this exact scenario and you’ll look back and share the same bit to them.

1107·2 years agoLol brb gonna share this with the CFO and watch them go into a panic. Going to bet they’ll freak out and by the end of 2024, no more Java for us.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Windows updating just before thesis defense
33·2 years agoI’ve always set windows to update around late hours.
But once in a while, Microsoft ignores that and does updates anyways. Usually just a quick min or two. But it’s still annoying.

Oh man this is going to suck.
We were looking for an authentication setup to allow for SSO and one of the front runners was Twilio. They have a meeting with us next week and I am not looking forward to this second hand embarrassment.
