Linux@programming.dev•Linux desktops have been stuck in old habits, and Hyprland breaks that pattern
5·6 months agoIt took me an evening to get my initial Hyprland config working, then about a week of tweaking before I was truly happy with it. That sounds like a lot of work, and honestly, it was, but it also doesn’t have to be work I repeat every time I install Linux. Now that the core setup was dialed in, I can copy my Hyprland config, keep related dotfiles for tools like Waybar, Wofi, my terminal, and notifications in one place, and bring most of that desktop with me to the next machine. I’ll still need to adjust hardware-specific details like monitor names, scaling, and input settings, but the hard part is already done.
Yeah that sounds like something I might have done 30 years ago, at around the same time I hand-compiled mplayer and all of its dependencies to be “just right”. When I manually adjusted the kernel config for my desktop PC and patiently waited 45 minutes for the kernel to finish compiling. Back when I gave a shit about getting the “optimimum”.
My name is Lars Wirzenius, and I was there when Linux started.

2·6 months agoThe OS is just way more transparent and communicative in a way that facilitates learning (once you learn the basics of how to communicate with it, such as not being terrified of the terminal)
I could not agree more. Linux is not perfect in any way, but at least it tells you what the problem is. Windows? Oh sure, you can probably get that information somehow, somewhere, in some event log that is only recorded if you sacrifice a chicken at midnight and dance around a campfire on one foot.

14·6 months agoI play all kinds of games and they just work. Sometimes you have to adjust the settings a bit, but to be honest, that is rarely the case. At first I had problems because I wanted mod support for Cyberpunk 2077 and I tried to get the Nexus apps to work (any of them) and it just would not work. But then, someone suggested the native Linux app Limo which works very well for me for installing and administrating mods. For installing and starting the games, I used to use Lutris a long time ago, but now I rely on Heroic Games Launcher, and unlike Lutris, it has not let me down so far.
I use Bazzite btw.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•is it true that "cisphobia"/"heterophobia" is just as bad as LGBTQ+phobia?
352·7 months agoThis follows a rather familar pattern of right wing behaviour:
- do something terrible to someone else
- lie about it and say the victim is doing the very same thing to you (projection)
- declare yourself the victim and the real victims the “bad guys”
In other words, no. It is pure bullshit, and I very much doubt it even exists.
Now, hatred of right wing assholes / nazis / republicans? That is real.

48·10 months agoThat’s right, reject science, accept stupidity.
Next up: Pray the math away.
Not what I said at all. I said the few limitations I know of do not matter for 99% of what I would want to do, meaning there are a few use cases I can think of (and that I had in the past) where X11 offered something Wayland does not, but they are such corner cases that for all intents and purposes, they do not matter.
Did really not expect such a passive agressive response for that…

As expected, this article is frustratingly devoid of detail.
So what does that mean, that it was unleashed at AES-ECB?
What a load of horse hockey.
