My experience, updates usually work fine. Dist upgrades work fine 2/3 of the time.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Kevin Barry, the founder and original developer of Nova Launcher has stopped working on Nova Launcher and the open sourcing efforts.
3·9 months agoI started using them back in the day, when most phones had a very limited launcher. I have used nova for many years, it has a ton of customization options. I’m not sure how it is these days, but previous phones also came with thing that I did not like and could not disable or remove. Like a permanent Google search bar, or the Google assistant being a dedicated page on your home screen.

2·10 months agoThe thing about it costs about the same as Spotify is not really true. I have been using Spotify family for a long long time (maybe 10 years). I use it with 5 other “family” members and we split the costs.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more users
81·10 months agoI remember when “the internet” was a bunch of older nerds and kids. My parents, aunts, uncles, etc didn’t even know how to go online. It was great! More users made it much worse. Please don’t become the mainstream OS.
This is what everyone I know that had one told me. The operation was not that bad, maybe a 5/10 on pain. The days after my ballsack was getting really purple blue and parts of my penis also, this was more like a 8/10. Where a 10/10 is breaking your leg because a car drove over it After about a week I went to a doctor to make sure this was “normal”, he said everything looked ok, but I’m just unlucky as for most guys it is almost painless. About 10 days after things got better in a couple of days.
I don’t want to scare anyone but going in thinking it will not hurt is not true for everyone. For me thinking it shouldn’t hurt (while it did) made me worry much more, thinking they might have messed something up.
Meh, it’s definitely not 100% chance of success. Every year that passes reduces the chance of a succes to reverse it. Also there is always a risk for other complications like ending up with erectile dysfunction, the chance is really small, but I wouldn’t take it too lightly. Mine also hurt like hell for a week and everything was purple blue. I’m probably the exception, but I definitely don’t want to do it a second time.
I don’t know, I once installed xubuntu on my parents old laptop, my dad who knows a little bit about computers hated it. My mom who knows nothing about computers liked it. My dad knows just enough to get spyware and shit
My Google account is older than 18 years, yet they still want me to verify my age for some youtube videos.

The article states that’s what the privacy policy sais samsung can sample every 500ms and LG every 10ms. It doesn’t really mean they are, but it’s definitely possible. A very basic way of detecting content is to take a 1000 pixels evenly spaced out over the screen and store the color values. That gives you something you can match against a database. You don’t need to process a 4K screenshot for this.
99% of what we watch is from streaming (Netflix, YouTube, etc). A dumb tv with a Chromecast probably isn’t any better.
Mint is great I use it on my desktop and laptop and have been for years (I switched when Ubuntu has that unity desktop period). For Linux it’s the most “it just works” distro for me. My second choice would be manjaro, but mint also has the advantage that there is so much help for Ubuntu you can find online, that usually also works for mint.

1·1 year agoThats true, I once had to repair my washing machine and I could only find 1 video about the same model and same repair. It was a large Russian man that I could not understand (this was before auto generated subtitles).
Anyways, I just looked at the video and copied everything he did and I fixed my machine.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why Denmark is dumping Microsoft Office and Windows for LibreOffice and LinuxEnglish
4·1 year agoYeah true, but these are more business to business. RHEL support is pretty expensive, and in my experience Oracle support (maybe not really open source) is both terrible and ridiculously expensive. Maybe this will create a market for more consumer like support. Maybe that could even create new business models for open source software.
Or and I know this sounds crazy, we (I actually mean you) collectively agree on laws that gives everyone a couple of paid vacation weeks a year.

These are decent points, but if you would use Linux you would not have these problems! You would have different problems, but somehow blame others, like why didn’t make X decent drivers for Linux, or why am I still forced to use Teams…
