Hey folks, I have several accounts across the fediverse (Lemmy, pixelfed, mastodon, bookwyrm), and I think it would be neat to have a single identity across all these platforms.
This is just something ActivityPub just doesn’t handle very well. It’s one of the things AT Proto (Bluesky, Tangled) handles a lot better and hopefully something we steal from it.
Rebased, a fork of Pleroma
The TERF fork?
Could I still use the different apps? (Blorp, Pachli, Rocinante). Would I be missing features?
No, these apps depend on the various platform APIs. Pachli might work, depending on how Mastodon-compatible Pleroma’s API is, but Blorp and Rocinante will not.

She’s updated the comment now to say ‘a lot of us outright ban’, which is more accurate.
Just a side note, GNOME Circle and Extensions are two different things (but both do ban AI projects). Circle is a way for GNOME to say a third party app is good, while Extensions are like browser extensions but for the DE.

You don’t have to be subscribed to see activities in a community (including downvotes) but someone on you instance does for the community know to send the activities to that instance.
Disabling downvotes doesn’t actually prevent items being downvoted, it just hides them from those that don’t want to see it.
Disabling donvotes in the instance setting does prevent them being recorded on that instance. You can see the code here.

track downvotes from outside instances
No, Lemmy just forwards the downvote to the community’s subscribers, so other instances receive them. The downvote is not written to the db on instances with it disabled.

Provenance has never been something you can guarantee with code in an open contribution model (which is not the only way of governing an open source project). For all you know the code could be copy and pasted from a proprietary codebase, or be the product of third party who’s work is being plagiarised by the submitter. A software project is ultimately a community and is build on trust and faith that people are acting in good faith. The kind of person who would deliberately (and gleefully as I’ve seen in some social media posts) go into a community and violate its stated values and standards, no matter how arbitrary and illegitimate they feel those are, has bigger character flaws to worry about than their reliance on stochastic parrots to write code.
‘No AI’ rules are ultimately about fostering certain community values and norms than guaranteeing no LLM code makes it in.

AI code bans may be impossible to enforce in the first place
I hate this attitude that if a rule or standard can’t be enforced perfectly, we shouldn’t strive for it. We can’t (reasonably) run an OS free of proprietary software, does that mean the free software movement should just give up?

A new and notable feature is the automated fact-checking tool, a Gemini-based “veracity engine for real-time analysis” (“Vera” for short), which runs on every tweet.
Lol, they added ‘Grok is this true’ to the entire platform, just dead on arrival.
Of course you run NetBSD 🙄.
(/s)

Lol, when did I disagree with your reasoning? At most we disagree on the meaning of ‘local model’. Have a nice rest of your night, sister.

I bet you don’t own or like an absolute gob of them but it doesn’t change their usefulness
I was commenting based on my experience with this stuff, it was a lot of work to set up and the results I got were bad. I never even contended that it could be useful (but I’m reading selectively), I said you that you need decent hardware for it to be useable. I have an RX 6800 XT and 32GB of RAM and it was really slow, even with recommended models.
Jfc why even comment if you’re gonna be so dumb and selective with your reading?
I tried to engage in good faith, and you proceeded to call me an idiot, sorry I reacted poorly to you being rude. You get what you put in.

Just because you don’t understand a tool or how to properly use it does not mean someone else doesn’t.
You brought up the Kimi model up in a conversation about local models being viable, something that requires 8 Nvidia GB300s as a prerequisite. And I’m sorry I don’t follow you’re little hobby close enough for you, I did try it and it sucked.

If you want something useable you need a decent amount of RAM/VRAM and a modern GPU, things that aren’t exactly accessible these days. That Kimi model is apparently half a terabyte in size and requires 100s of GB of VRAM, so I don’t know why you’re saying it’s a ‘local’ model.

They’re really leaning into the email similarities here, not a fan of moving the sidebar to the other side but I’ll get over it. My biggest wish on the UI front though is for them to add a threaded view for replies like what Bluesky has, navigating long threads on Mastodon can be really taxing just trying to follow reply chains.

Why not just use something like Wordpress? Plenty of web fiction is already published on it and it federates.

I mostly use Foliate, but I actually do most of my ebook reading on my phone.

Confirmed: the only divine church is the Church of Emacs.

The best part is that this won’t even work, the max page size in Lemmy is 100.

Seems to be a bug in Piefed’s linkify code for punycode. It’s transforming the the double hypen into an en dash.
AT Proto is a terrible base for a chat app. There’s a reason Bluesky’s DMs aren’t stored in your PDS. Hell, even your bookmarks (which are stored in your PDS) are off protocol.
