Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the StartEnglish
251·3 months agoThis is quite an impressive launch from Framework. Even with the high RAM and storage prices, it is still cost competitive with an equivalent MacBook Pro (my yardstick for mid-high end laptops), but with a fully open design you can run Linux on without any virtual machines, and with (claimed) nearly equal battery life. I am somewhat disappointed though by that display, in my opinion touch is not as worthwhile compared to a display with local dimming (OLED/Mini LED).

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Tips for people using 3DS Sound in 2026English
2·4 months agoTo the best of my knowledge, most of the CD rippers back in the day used the Fraunhofer codec or in the case of iTunes its own encoder, so I guess this only really became an issue once FLAC sources became somewhat commonplace. In addition, the encoders used on a decent number of music download sites (most notably Sony’s Mora) seem to work fine on the 3DS, bar the long loading time with the images, so I guess Nintendo never felt the need to make it work with other encoders. Knowing them though, there’s probably some horrible spaghetti code behind the scenes causing this.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Tips for people using 3DS Sound in 2026English
2·4 months agoJust did some more trials and the Fraunhofer AAC codec works. Check the update in the post for details, but the TL:DR is to either use fre:ac’s Flatpak (which includes the encoder) or find a version of FFmpeg for your distro that includes the encoder.

Linux@lemmy.ml•GNOME & Firefox Consider Disabling Middle Click Paste By Default: "An X11'ism...Dumpster Fire"English
1·6 months agoIf you use a ThinkPad that has its track point designed around the assumption that middle click is used for scroll and only scroll, it will send you crazy. Thankfully KDE can disable it in most apps through a setting, but some apps keep on doing it anyway.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Pokemon Pokopia launches March 5, 2026English
3·8 months ago£58.99 (UK price) is the same price as Legends Z-A, despite Pokopia seemingly being a smaller side game. Even if the game is good, there is no way it’s going to sell well at that price to anyone other than die-hard Pokemon fans. Persona 5 Tactica (which I really like) did the exact same thing (full game price for smaller side game) and it did not end well, copies of Tactica still linger on clearance to this day for sometimes less than 20% of the original price since a lot of the launch excitement evaporated.
I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM6s (similar sort of pairing and Bluetooth system although with the addition of LDAC) and I can confirm the Sound Connect app is not required to pair the headphones (works perfectly on my laptop with a Qualcomm Bluetooth chip and my desktop with an Intel chip, both running Fedora). It’s only for settings management and firmware updates through your phone. It might be worth checking if there’s any firmware updates for the headphones, and also try a few more resets. I used to have a pair of Bose headphones that had the exact same problem as you are experiencing, but it would go away after disconnecting and reconnecting a few times. It’s worth also seeing if you can pair with any other type of device in addition to your phone (Windows, smart TV, anything that can do Bluetooth A2DP) as it might be an issue with pairing to devices in general.
Out of curiosity how are you triggering pairing mode? If you are triggering pairing mode through the Sound Connect app, it might be worth instead holding the hardware button on the back of the case for 5 seconds to enter pairing mode.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Nintendo is releasing a Zelda Breath of the Wild vinyl box set in the West to gauge the demand for physical soundtracks there | VGCEnglish
4·9 months agoI really want this to succeed. I’ve had to import soundtrack CDs from Japan so many times for games I enjoy (Nintendo and non-Nintendo), so to not have to go through the import process would be so nice. I do wish Nintendo would follow the lead of other game companies however and release their soundtracks digitally on stores rather than just on Nintendo Music (which only has a limited selection). If you could just buy the FLACs or M4As off somewhere like iTunes, Qobuz, or 7digital it would save having to ship a soundtrack at all.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•YouTube Is Working With Nintendo To Make Its App Available On Switch 2English
2·9 months agoThe Wii had all sorts. At least here in the UK we got YouTube, BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm (later including Amazon Instant Video), Netflix, and Crunchyroll all to download from the Wii Shop Channel. It wasn’t the best experience, since the Wii tops out at 480p and most people used composite cables that had a resolution of 480i interlaced, but it was good enough for the time.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•YouTube Is Working With Nintendo To Make Its App Available On Switch 2English
8·9 months agoI was very surprised to see YouTube was not working on launch day. Considering how popular it is, I thought Nintendo and Google would have had it ready to go. Hopefully they sort it out soon.
There’s still a surprising amount of devices made by HMD (who own Nokia’s consumer phone brand, so you’ll sometimes see them as Nokias) that run Series 30+ (think old Nokia software with some very slight modern enhancements) but have 4G hardware to play ball on modern networks.
I really want PostmarketOS to succeed, even to be good enough as a secondary device. The long term support and software flexibility seems so promising, but it is still nowhere near ready for most people.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Chibi-Robo! - GameCube – Nintendo ClassicsEnglish
9·11 months agoI’m glad Chibi Robo is finally getting a chance to shine on a more popular console. After the original game, the franchise was run into the ground so hard, so to even have this playable on a modern Nintendo system is quite exciting. Maybe if it’s popular enough on NSO we might get a full revival? Unlikely, but you never know.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Nintendo-owned titles excluded from Japan’s biggest speedrunning event after organizers were told they had to apply for permission for each gameEnglish
7·11 months agoI don’t know why Nintendo feel the need to get so overly protective over displays of their games (streaming, competitions, so on). There’s been so many games I have bought because I saw someone play it on a stream or something and thought it was neat. What are they even losing out on? They are just shooting themselves in the foot here.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Nintendo raises the Switch 1 price from $299 to $339 / The Switch OLED price jumped by $50 on Sunday, to $399.99.English
7·1 year agoThis does make me wonder how much Nintendo are subsidising US bound Switch 2s, considering the price on that hasn’t increased since launch (yet). Maybe they think it’s worth it to take a hit on it and try and make it up with higher priced software?

From my experience trying to find retrofit displays for my ThinkPad P14s Gen 5, there’s two routes Framework probably could go down for this.
An OLED would be the best display option, and is somewhat more available. However, it requires extra voltage circuitry in order to work compared to an LCD, so there would probably need to be a mainboard revision to accommodate this, making it quite unlikely as it locks out users of existing systems (Unless they have some sort of adapter? No idea how that would work but maybe something could be done).
Alternatively, I have seen that there are Mini LED displays with the same connector (40 pin 4 lane eDP) and voltages that can work as a direct replacement, although without the per pixel backlight advantage of OLED. However there appears to be very few panels available in this configuration, probably raising the price a bit, especially since I can’t find any in the 13.5 inch size of the Framework 13. Considering this Pro version has a custom manufactured display though, they could probably source one eventually and sell it as an upgrade.
