Linux@programming.dev•It seems Linux Mint is dropping GNU coreutils in favor of rust-coreutils following Ubuntu.

We should make a resposter account on shitter that posts all EFF mastodon posts. Append the phrase “Resposted from mastodon, please post responses here: [mastodon link]”

Technology@beehaw.org•Linux kernel maintainers are following through on removing Intel 486 support
1·1 month agoHehe good call, I meant for there to be a slash between gov’t and industrial.
Gov’t industrial jobs only exist in communist countries where capitalists aren’t given their god-given /s right to maximize and take profits from any industrial process.

2·2 months agoI think this means once a stream of photons is established it is theoretically possible to somehow perturb them in a way that a detectable lack of photon can be transmaiited along the beam FTL. This could be huge in 50 years.
Doesn’t mean much for travelling FTL, but information could be transmitted FTL in a vacuum?
I’m picturing Mars to Earth communication where we beam lasers back and forth.
Would be nice to reduce the delay
I wish I understood the nature of these vortices.
Good news! You’re about to learn about for-profit prisons and how racism is very profitable for shareholders, especially in how it suppresses wages and keeps poor people fighting other poor people instead of forming unions…
Maybe not right now tho. I’m done poo… Uhm I’m about to do something other than googling “prison industrial complex” and “how racism effects unionizing”

11·4 months agoI gave him lots of money when he showed off Teslas all-electric sports car, pitched the model S sedan, and laid out the plan for solar roof tiles, and home battery storage.
It was a beautiful moment when I saw a billionaire putting their money against fossil fuels.
When he was struggling to get model 3 production rolling, I gave him lots more money.
Then he started shitting on trans folks and I started divesting, but still wanted Tesla to succeed.
Then he essentially bought twitter with that money I gave him to develop Tesla and reports of working conditions started coming out so I divested more… But I held hope Tesla board would kick him out and I could put that money back.
Then he got into politics and Tesla board voted to give Elon tens of billions and I left all the way.
Fucking shame.
There was a moment when Tesla was investing tens of billions into actual electrification research and developing compelling projects and making lots of money because of it.

I skimmed it and there’s lots of good advice I think.
I’m no security expert and this is an honest question.

Solarpunk technology@slrpnk.net•The clever way food trucks are now using e-bike batteries
15·4 months ago…and it costs them about the same as it does to use gas, but without the noise, fumes and maintenance gas generators use.
They use the e-bike battery swap stations so they don’t have to worry about charging. Payment is via a subscription model

Technology@lemmy.world•A new cooling technology freezes food without warming the climateEnglish
14·4 months agoI thought the same thing.
Seems they are mainly saying they developed cooling method that doesn’t rely on a greenhouse gas for a refrigerant. Not nothing.
…and if you stretch and release something off solar/wind power greenhouse emissions will be very low indeed.
I’m curious about lifespan of these systems. I don’t know much about SMAs, but my intuition says they degrade. Am I wrong? I hope I am :)

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Guys, what's the best Linux distro to install on my PC?
2·4 months agoAssuming you’re a hobbyist who wants to play games, CatxhyOS or Mint would be my suggestion
I like Ubuntu too, but Snaps can be annoying with permission weirdness and odd errors that usually stem from their sandboxing system. To be clear the sandboxing is good in theory, but I tried using the Blender to edit a file I got from a friend and I ran into permissions issues. I ended up deleting the snaps and installing from command line and it was so much better.
Installing blender without the app store is still super easy…
sudo apt install blender
