Been using linux since 2006 and this is the first time I see an ad for it. Well done.

Linux@programming.dev•On Alpine 3.24, can sudo be replaced with doas-sudo-shim after Pi-Hole is installed?
9·5 days agoFor starters I’d file a bug against pihole so they support both doas and sudo or drop them altogether and make you use either sudo or doas when executing the script. A hard dependency on sudo is really weird imho.
You know, if ubuntu proposed to be a serious distro again it would rename itself to UwU

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] KDE, dolphin, "selecting" file with RMB in empty space?
3·9 days agoI guess they are thinking about the ‘Compact’ option
Not sure about that. When I first installed Gentoo with OpenRC everything went fine, just the boot/shutdown times were a bit slower than with SystemD’s when it didn’t do this shenanigans. But when I started reading about the SystemD hype I decided to try it and it did this at random - and got fed up so went back to OpenRC and never experienced this again. Maybe a misconfiguration on my part or something but I didn’t do something out of what the manual said about how to set it up.

Linux@programming.dev•Xfce dev sponsored by Xfce project to create Wayland compositor admits to using Claude LLM/AI for development, dismisses ethical concerns
81·20 days agoDespite still not getting why XFCE still haven’t moved on from GTK and the GNOME shenanigans on it - to the E libraries so XFCE and Enlightenment do a Dragon Ball Z type of fusion and become the one DE to rule them all, and thinking that the XFCE ui is a bit ass at some places for reasons I can’t understand (like having to scroll at some pages on their settings and the misaligned randomly placed stuff in there), I still have respect for their long-time devs and the work they’ve poured on their project over the years. Pretty sure the common sense will prevail in this case.
The other day on a thread here about “people who use other init systems, why?” and i wrote about my experience with systemd and git downvoted for mysterious reasons. Other people that did the same as me also got their downvote sixpacks. And now they want to make it seem like it’s just the people that hate systemd the annoying ones…
On a serious note, 250k stars for the linux kernel is kinda too few github stars
Yes but you will be insufferable even to us linux users

Linux@lemmy.ml•Has anyone tried Amber for writing bash scripts? Would you recommend it?
20·24 days agoI wonder why they decided to make it transpile to bash instead of posix sh.
I use bash because gentoo’s portage has a hard dependency on it so in my mind it doesn’t make much sense to install and keep yet another shell just because colors and autocompletion. If they ever get rid of the bashisms in portage I’d surely consider moving to fish, but getting rid of the bashisms in portage means that portage could be ported to the BSDs one more time and we could have Gentoo/BSD again
Jj better then git A LOT
Wow, you spelled mercurial really wrong

123·1 month agoAs people mentioned in other publication about this those problems, which are devastating, are not being caused by the technology itself but the corpos (and the diabolical and insatiable greed of those who run them) behind it. As you are concluding, local llms can be fine, though I’d think he could have a stronger instance about that point - trying to discourage people about using corporate llms and incentivating local llms.
Not wanting to be pedantic and I couldn’t care less actually, but it also happens that linux is not a pure unix

Android@lemmy.world•There's one group of Android users Google's new sideloading rules won't affectEnglish
71·1 month agoThat’s odd, I can remember back in my day that Samsung-s were like the first thing they poked with because pretty much everyone used Samsung phones. Maybe they did something to their bootloader or something…?
I won’t blame you for not knowing, though, but now that the writing is on the wall, better be sure before buying another phone about compatibility for third party OSes, if not one that comes with one already installed

122·1 month agoYou’d need to check for a specific device in their wiki but I’d be rare if they don’t support ir or that they aren’t working to port it to a device

I don’t know if there’s such thing but i wish there was a foss alternative for street view too
