Specifically the “open” web. They recently said the web was thriving from their point of view. Since they’re a major part of what is “closing” the web.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mastercard and Visa face backlash after hundreds of adult games removed from online stores Steam and Itch.ioEnglish
9·1 year agoThat’s their goal for sure, what I mean is how are they pretending to justify it?
The same way they always do: “WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!?!?!1111”

Linux@programming.dev•Linux's Modern NTFS Driver Will Now Correctly Handle Symlinks Created On WindowsEnglish
10·1 year agoThis is like seeing those php jokes in programming humor communities. Because they’re clearly made by someone who is well over a decade out of date with their information.
For reference symbolic links were properly introduced in Vista(2006), but junction points were available before that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Itch.io deindexes NSFW games after becoming the latest target of skittish credit card companies and anti-porn group Collective Shout, catching an award-winning indie and more in the crossfireEnglish
2·1 year agoExactly. They “crawl” category/tag lists, etc. and follow links. And if there are no links to those pages, they wont be indexed.
(Depending on some settings. For all I know they’ve set up “hidden redirects” for popular crawlers to pages that show them)

2·1 year agoedit: right, respective tags list no porn games anymore.
Which could cause them to no longer be indexed by search engines depending on other settings. So you’d need to find direct links from other websites.

21·1 year agoDeindexed/delisted, not removed.
Try putting the names into the search field on the site, or browsing for them in the categories they are in.

Technology@lemmy.world•Japan sets new internet speed world record — 4 million times faster than average US speedsEnglish
2·1 year agoYeah, I’ve had a fiber cable running all the way into my apartment for over a decade, and directly into my router for years.
Most memes or jokes referencing a direct problem in PHP, are old or made by people who haven’t touched the language in a decade(version 7 was in 2015, and it removed/fixed a lot of issues and added needed features).
There’s also the huge looming thing that a lot of programmers forget: Websites like Wikipedia run on PHP, not to mention the amount of WordPress and similar websites are out there. Which means it will keep going strong. And for a while Facebook also used quite a lot of it, to the point where they made a rudimentary compiler instead of rewriting parts in more efficient languanges.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does AI use so much power?English
15·1 year agowill there be huge power plants just dedicated to AI all over the world soon?
Construction has started(or will soon) to convert a retired coal power plant in Pennsylvania to gas power, specifically for data-centers. Upon completion in 2027 it will likely be the third most powerful plant in the US.
The largest coal plant in North Dakota was considering shutting down in 2022 over financial issues, but is now approved to power a new data-center park.
Location has been laid out for a new power plant in Texas, from a single AI company you’ve probably never heard of.
And on it goes.

Linux@lemmy.ml•KDE Devs, I Love You, But Please Remove This FeatureEnglish
3·1 year agoYeah, for some reason they’ve seemed to made it harder to find the actual start menu settings instead of more generic taskbar settings. So that’s a fair point.
In the original studies they threw a bunch of adult wolves from different packs into a small enclosure. Then reported the fight for dominance as if it was how they normally act in nature. Most packs in nature are just a mom and a dad with kids from the last 2-3 years, who usually leave on their own.

102·1 year agoWindows has this “feature”, where is the setting?
I assume youre talking about W11?
Because the “Show recently added apps” setting is third option in the start menu settings on W10.

Pulse of Truth@infosec.pub•Writable File in Lenovo’s Windows Directory Enables a Stealthy AppLocker BypassEnglish
2·1 year agoSo not only does Lenovo hide executables in alternate data streams, that can be launched as if ran from within the Windows folder. It’s writable by logged in users. And it was first discovered six years ago, and is still there.
On top of that, Lenovo is apparently not going to release any patches, they’re just going to give out some “remediation guidance”.
I live on the other side of the world from their HQ, and I can hear the lawyers screaming and paralegals furiously typing.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•In 6 hours it will be illegal to say "I support Palestine Action" in the UK, with a sentence of up to 14 years in prison.English
2·1 year agoIt is representative of how British people often avoid the truth or confrontations and instead use sarcasm, idioms, etc. that understate the situation.
The English are also a worldwide example of people who go “Oh no, everything is fine.” when everything is wrong.
There are even famous British comedies like Fawlty Towers, that have a lot of jokes about how they don’t like to be honest or confrontational.

Technology@lemmy.world•ICEBlock climbs to the top of the App Store charts after officials slam itEnglish
21·1 year agoWhile you’re right to be skeptical, if they just wanted to collect data they would have an Android version. And their stated reason for not supporting it, is that push notifications on Android would require them to at store device-IDs, which they want to avoid for privacy reasons and being vulnerable to subpoenas.

461·1 year agoThere is also legislation that can be used to arrest most protestors. And you can face a multi-year prison sentence if you say something wrong on social media.
The UK is actually further along the dystopian path than the USA in some ways, but as is tradition they are trying to pretend it’s not happening.
I wonder how many hundreds of millions of dollars they’ve set aside for settlements.

Linux@programming.dev•Must fight temptation to buy an overpriced raspberry piEnglish
2·1 year agoTheir comment was indicating that laptop batteries will be damaged if left plugged in constantly. Which is a thing that can happen with some laptops, and most old ones.
My comment was about how some modern laptops when left plugged in, will charge the battery and then start running directly from the wall-power once the battery is full. They bypass the charging once it is indicated to have a “full charge”.

Linux@programming.dev•Must fight temptation to buy an overpriced raspberry piEnglish
9·1 year agoThat depends on the age and quality of the laptop. It’s been a while since some started directly running off the cable when the battery is full.

Doesn’t defend!? They’re straight up just posting the stream keys…
