I like Haiku, i’ve installed it a couple times. An incredibly easy and insanely quick install. If you’re looking for a simple OS to browse the internet and do some light dev work and need it to run on old hardware you honeslty can’t go wrong with it. Out of all the none linux OS’ I was honestly surprised it had Floorp, don’t even have that on any of the BSDs.

ok hear me out: If a user is going to build and compile their own kernel to simply put in a couple cheats for a specific game then…hey let them cheat. I HIGHLY doubt your average cheater is going to go through all that to cheat in like arc raiders or something.

I just don’t see hundreds or even thousands of players doing this. Not enough anyways to ruin the online experience for others.

could it look close? eh maybe. the visual customization of it is still kinda limited. like if you’re looking to have the same customization levels of say Plasmashell you’re out of luck. If you’re ok with the “pill” look then it’s fine but beyond that you couldn’t make it look like say DWM’s bar or what have you. But I suppose if you wanted it to look like cosmic or maybe gnome it’d be more doable since they all kinda share the same principal of “pills are a great look”

As far as if it’ll play nice with GNOME? no clue. I’ve used it with Kwin in the past as a replacement for Plasmashell and it worked fairly well.

you don’t use Noctalia alongside plasmashell, it just works alongside Kwin so I’m assuming that’s what OP meant. Noctalia just replaces your plasmashell.

His original claim to fame was building a gaming website in the early 00s utilizing some really poorly written php. a friend then asked him to essentially build basecamp because said friend didn’t know any better and DHH was the only person that kinda sorta knew what he was doing. he got lucky with ruby on rails (what he used to build basecamp) cause his previous stuff was really bad.

they’ve been doing this for a while. just look at one of the many canadian financial subs, it’s friggin crazy town. Hell it goes beyond just the financial subs, many Canadian subreddits are also insanely manipulated by outside interests. /r/Toronto is notorious for it. ANYTHING that could potentially make the city look bad is quickly removed. But post as many photos of rainbows, the cn tower, snow and rain as you like. It’s an absolute joke that you can’t even have a discussion about the city because it will be removed if there’s even the slightest hint of making Toronto look bad.

every now and then I like going through and reading Linus’ commit messages for uemacs. It’s impressive that he’s still maintaining that thing on a near weekly basis.

Also he writes some of the longest commit messages known to man to the point where i’m like “I didn’t know you could write them that long”

It’s nice that people are finally starting to write about what a coke fuelled POS DHH is. People within the Ruby community have known this for years. the fact that he is where he is because of some truly horrible PHP is mind boggling.

It’s not a foundation. It COULD HAVE been one but in typical coke fuelled ranting DHH fashion he blogged about how the money would go towards marketing thus, womp womp, no tax exempt foundation for you buddy.

I just use Floorp with my linux and windows installs. on OpenBSD my options are a bit more limited so I need to either try to compile Floorp for it or find something else (if there even is anything else)

Hell Floorp is even on Haiku. It’s a rock solid firefox fork made by a Japanese dev team that doesn’t release/update until things are absolutely rock solid. I can’t even recall the last time floorp broke, if it ever has. good browser, always my go to FF fork.

For backups I would highly suggest you look into Borg backups. There are free services that work with Borg as long as your backups are under 10GB. I’ve used borgbase.com in the past and that always worked well. With Borg you can automatically schedule your backups to not only upload them online but also to remind you to plug in like an external usb drive and backup. all backups are encrypted so really secure, fantastic tool I highly recommend.

you sure Fedora didn’t get corrupt? I’ve had that happen with Fedora on a bad shutdown and was no longer able to boot from the SSD boot partition.

When you run the SSD from a liveUSB can you write to it just fine? assuming you’ve backed up your data why not just try either installing another distro like Debian to test it or reinstall Fedora.

I daily drive OpenBSD, I find it much better than my experience with FreeBSD. OpenBSD I feel has better wifi support, better VM support, and I found more of my devices worked on OpenBSD as opposed to FreeBSD (pair of USB Headphones I had just absolutely WOULD NOT work on FreeBSD, on OpenBSD it wasn’t an issue)

That being said OpenBSD’s policy on AI isn’t exactly clear yet. NetBSD however has straight up said no to AI.

The BSD’s are good, they’ve come a long way, but you can’t go into them thinking you’ll get a similar Linux up to date experience. the BSD’s are still a few years behind but if you’re going to try and make a switch I would suggest NetBSD or OpenBSD over FreeBSD. I might give NetBSD another go as I think I gave up on it last time because the install process annoyed me.

yeah it’s bad that the omarchy community has taken the DHH kool-aid. I watched a video lastnight of a guy from India who was praising Omarchy and said all the hate was because purely of DHH and not understanding why. It was like “My guy, he made comments directed towards YOU and YOUR People specifically about living in London. He doesn’t want YOU to using his distro”.

when I first switched to linux it was on a hybrid laptop also and it was with Mint. Nothing but issues. once I switched distros (cachyos) no issues.

Why? x11/wayland. X11 has issues with hybrid setups. just doesn’t work right at all. for me if I was playing a game and tabbed out of it and back it would either just show a black screen or simply show the desktop while hte game was still running. Once I switched to CachyOS (and thus a wayland DE with KDE or a wayland WM) no issues.

I have a Microsoft Windows USB drive I bought a few years ago. it’s technically win 10 but when I installed that it put me on the first version of Win 11, and then just manually upgraded (took awhile) from there.

their “plugin store” is just the wild west of exploits and slop. well over 1000 plugins, all vibe coded, majority exploitable.

If you install Omarchy on anything other than a VM I’m sorry but you’re an idiot and this “distro” is a massive disservice to new comers to Linux.
