The oldest game I still really enjoy is probably The Secret of Monkey Island for DOS (1990). I like classic NES games too but I don’t really play them anymore.
What’s yours?
original gameboy tetris and unreal tournament 2004
I still love everything I played from the N64 era, and the old tycoon games (RCT2/OpenRCT) are amazing. Oldest recent fun was finding some great sesame street games I played as a kid to share w/ my son who is just learning letters and counting. Ernie’s Big Splash (1986) and Astro Grover (1984). Neither would really hold my attention today as an adult though.
I have been on a rct2 binge recently. Nothing quite his like that game and openrct is the best thing to ever happen to it. And agreed on the n64 era. It was like magic.
Isometric games are my jam. But the oldest might be Transport tycoon (1994) that I still enjoy even today
Monkey Island is probably next to Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis one of those really old games that I still play from time to time. One of the first games I played and one of those games where it doesn’t matter that graphics got better or gameplay was made more defined (eg old Sim City is not as much fun as even the next one later Sim City 2000, or old Summer Games/winter Games is sure not that much fun anymore for me).
Also those old Adventure games work super fine in ScummVM :D
Well I just finished again as of old game Pokémon Yellow, so that should counts, a game that I actively play almost daily is Jump Ultimate Stars for DS though.
God bless custom servers.
I still play Dodge 'Em, Journey Escape and Pitfall from the 2600 because these all take me back to my childhood in the 80s. On the C64 love Trolls and Tribulations, Archon, Ultima 3 and 4, and the Infocom games, especially Zork 1, 2 and 3. Even though I played them through more than once, each time it takes me back to when I first played them.
I still run through Baldur’s Gate (1998) from time to time (I should try a game as a Chaotic/Evil group but I like being a good-two-shoes too much). I love the graphics, story and game play.
I mean to dust off my copy of Rome Total War (2004) at some point, mostly for the mods, but I’m still playing through all the factions of Warhammer Total War 2 to get my money’s worth out of it! It’s a tough life.
I played the remaster of Command & Conquer (1995/2010) a little while ago: I was overjoyed to finish the GDI campaign for the first time, having given up on ever doing so when I was young. The NOD campaign still proved too much, but the nostalgia and music might persuade me to try again!
I missed out on the original Monkey Island, so I’m grateful for Let’s Plays on Youtube! An excellent game. :)
Baldur’s Gate, and especially Baldur’s Gate 2, are so good. I also occasionally replay them. The magic system is still IMO the best of any CRPG. Playing an evil group in these games just doesn’t work that well. I tried it, and most of the quest options are there, but feels pretty unsatisfying. I’d try Tyranny if you want to get this experience.
Thanks for the info - I’ve remembered that another thing that put me off is that with poor reputation you apparently can’t buy from shops and get chased out of town by the Flaming Fist guard: I’m very much a casual player, so that sounds like a major difficulty increase to me!
Thanks for the game suggestion. :)
Butt kicking for
goodevilness!
Super Mario Bros. (NES; NA release, 1985) although depending on your definition of “like” (I suck at it) it may be Frogger (Arcade, 1981).
Probably Marble Madness. The NES version was half my childhood and I love to seek out the arcade version at retro gaming expos, although my wrists are really not up to all that frantic trackballing these days.
(This thread is only allowing people to comment if they explicitly set a language from the dropdown. Not sure if that’s a setting OP has chosen or what, but PSA for anyone else getting the spinning wheel of death)

Huh, that’s really weird. I did not intentionally set this anywhere. Maybe this happened because of an incompatibility between my older version of Lemmy and the newer one running on lemmy.world …
omg I hated marble madness, my nan got it for me for the master system and it drove me insane and i stopped playing it.
(ps, thanks, i had the spinner of death)
Love me some M.U.L.E., old C64 game. The graphics, the music and the fun gameplay. Always try to get friends to play on my PC emulator.
Couple of oldies I fire up regularly: Tetris (Gameboy, 1989); Head Over Heels (Spectrum, 1987); Bruce Lee (C64, Atari, 1984)
