Personally, i loved voidfest. I spent more time on lemmy to catch them all!

Exactly… People hanging on to windows for dear life pretending like they had to “learn” windows
I feel like what you described should be a big fat warning on the nextcloud page
OP is a lot more gracious than most internet users by accepting some responsibility. But i wouldnt blame them. I might have done the same, and i’ve been self hosting nextcloud for 8 years now.
everything is possible in excel… someone wrote a DOOM clone in excel.
I once worked at a company where someone hacked together a PO generating tool in excel 10 years prior and it just kind of stuck around even though the company grew into a billion dollar market cap public company
Thats why i said client side view. Each servers community doesnt know i’m viewing 3 communities together on my phone and it doesnt affect them
The biggest problem with lemmy for me is the multiple “duplicate” communities.
There should be a feature to combine them at the client level. So the 3 different “privacy” communities could just be viewed as one on my lemmy client
Suicide linux. Nobody can run it for more than a day
Edit: i just searched “suicide linux” to see if it still exists and one of the top results was ian murdock’s wiki page, :(
… getting the maximum lifespan you can out of devices and keeping them out of landfills.
debian sid checking in.
The ultimate coffee device for max lifespan is vietnamese phin filter. $10, will never break.
Machine learning for helping a radiologist analyze images is super helpful and a mature field.
Whatever “AI” LLM nonsense tech bros are trying to add in to everything in the last 2 years is probably not all that helpful, but i could be proven wrong
I have always used conversation view in my desktop email client. Not sure why you think this is revolutionary or exclusive to gmail.
Probably not what you want to hear, but I think exiftool + bash script really is the way to go. A few years ago I had a similar need and searched for hours online… I ended up hacking together a “good enough” bash script that reads all the dates of my pictures and does some stuff. It took 30 mins of reading some basic bash scripting basics. Way less time than searching for a tool that probably doesnt exist.
In 2024, you can probably just ask chatgpt to write a quick and dirty bash script for you and it might require another 10mins of debugging/begging chatgpt to fix its mistakes
Sorry, my comment wasnt really directed at you specifically… Just the fediverse general hate for all things AI
yours was the first that mentioned “art” which triggered me, lol
I think we are actually both on the same page… You have a reasonable view of the whole AI thing. It’s rare on lemmy/mastodon
LLMs and image generating models are completely different things. Outputting an image doesnt require or benefit from reason and logic (other than making the model “understand” the prompt). Drawing a three headed monkey isnt “logical” and doesnt follow “reason” but that’s ok because art isnt about making photorealisitic images.
AI images could totally be useful as a tool in art. “But a computer made it! It’s not art!” It’s the same tired argument we heard about electronic music before.
But the fediverse seems to have such a hate boner for ANYTHING associated with AI (dont get me wrong, there is lots to hate. Mostly with tech-bro grifting…) that people are unable to see that these can be useful complements to human creativity.
Here’s another example… People crying that when an image contains AI generated elements, or maybe a video game contains some AI assets. People fly into a rage and want to dismiss the ENTIRE work and throw it all out. Human art doesnt require 100% human hands to make. Go look at any famous painting by a renaissance master. Did you know a lot of these guys had whole workshops of lackeys filling in background details for them? Are we going to throw out all the raphael and rembrandt paintings because they had assistance from other uncredited people?
Same with AI. Why cant an artist spend MORE time on important details and let AI draw some happy little trees in the background?
Signal is fine for almost everyone unless you’re truly doing dangerous work in a truly oppressive state.
I’m so tired of everyone telling others not to use signal because it uses phone numbers. Everyone in here acting like they’re mr. Robot or something.
Anonymity is not the same as privacy. Privacy is good enough for me
New text to speech models are incredible these days…
Again, we shouldnt replace actual voice actors for main dialog. But for generating thousands of lines of background chatter (which nobody would have time or resources to make anyway) LLM writing paired with text to speech could really help flesh out a living game world
I dont think LLMs will or should replace properly written dialogue.
Where they would shine is just generating inane background chatter. So instead of hearing an NPC say “i took an arrow to the knee”, or “jesus christ be praised! Henry’s come to see us!” 300 times, an LLM could generate some short one liners that are a bit more dynamic. It would go a long way to making the world feel more alive.
Newer versions of apt now have coloured text showing what will be installed (green) and what will be REMOVED (red)
Handy feature for someone like me who also makes mistakes
AI is fine if you know what you’re doing and can correct the mistakes it makes (i.e. use it as fancy code completion)
I’m not a developer and i havent touched code for over 10 yrs, but when i heard about my company pushing AI tools on the devs, i thought exactly what you said. It should be a tool for experienced devs who already know what they’re doing…
Lo and behold they did the opposite… They fired all the senior people and pushed AI on the interns and new grads… and then expected AI to suddenly make the jr devs work like the expensive Sr devs they just fired…
Wtf
I’m relatively new to lemmy, so i guess i missed all the other events
