  • That just goes with a territory of having an iPhone. When you bought that device you signed on to a culture of consumption that is enforced by the developer of that device.

The developer can’t force Apple to let the developer give it to you for free. Apple doesn’t tolerate free very well and anything that is free on Apple is likely either a privacy nightmare or is paid for by some subscription you have with Apple.

This isn’t a problem with the app It’s a problem with the Apple.

  • I also went on to explain why just because you don’t choose what the government does, doesn’t mean your vote is irrelevant.

It’s also not me making that claim It’s Princeton University that had a particularly well cited study showing that your vote actually does not influence the policy decisions of lawmakers.

Your vote is about preventing the creation of policy that is even worse. It’s not about enabling the creation of policy that is good. We are not at the phase of our relationship with our government where we can make them do good things. If we don’t keep working towards that we will backslide into fascism.

You have the wrong expectations if you think your vote is going to tell the government what to do. We’re just not there yet. You still have to vote If you’d like to get there one day.

  • Yes voting is important, but it doesn’t have the impact we often think it does.

The people we vote for aren’t necessarily going to be able to make policies we want, That’s not the reason why voting is so important right now. It might be one day, and I hold out hope that if I keep voting for democracy, it’ll happen.

Voting right now is basically an up or down vote on “should we keep seeking democracy?”

The Republican party is perfectly willing to make policies we do not want, and their end goal is actually the end of democracy.

So although our votes won’t necessarily compel the government to take actions we want it to take, they can help prevent it from taking actions we would like it to not take.

It’s a shitty deal, but considering the alternative…

  • Trump didn’t get into office because he got the most votes.

In fact voting as important as it is doesn’t actually decide what the government does. There was a whole Princeton study about this recently that your vote essentially has no impact on what the government chooses to do.

Voting is largely a public demonstration of how much we are willing to tolerate the government turning on us in any given year. The fewer people that show up to vote the more quickly we march towards fascist dystopia.

  • If I could get Apple devices in an open compatibility I wouldn’t hate them I probably still wouldn’t buy them though.

My hatred comes from the fact that I believe critical thinking and mental flexibility are very important skills for people to develop at a very young age. I think one of the most important avenues for the development of reasoning and technical skills is through interaction with technology.

That technology should encourage and reward your curiosity. Apple does not reward curiosity or encourage it, it taxes it to such a degree that Apple users are by and large technologically illiterate.

I grew up on Apple computers, and when I was little the Mac nerds we’re doing some pretty cool and impressive shit with their Mac tech that you just can’t do now. It was a gateway to me learning about a lot of this technology, but they are a walled garden now, and it gets worse every year.

  • A large part of my job is helping young people and seniors learn how to use technology. Apple makes that much more difficult because Apple stuff only works the Apple way none of it translates to any other technology.

Whenever I talk to somebody who doesn’t know what a folder is, what a browser is, that when they download files they go to a place, how to share content with non Apple users, how to use non Apple software, how to use any other non Apple technology, its because Apple wants it that way. I just don’t understand why a company this abusive would have fans.

It’s like being a fan of Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Wells Fargo, or The Pinkertons. You are paying extra for fashion accessories that are objectively lower spec and with a reduced feature list than the alternative that is cheaper. The only benefit of Apple devices is the security, And that’s easily bypassed because they don’t need to compromise the device to get your information from Apple.

  • All of the data harvesting of Android TV can be blocked with ease. None of the closed ecosystem, price gouging, or feature rot of Apple devices can be worked around in any way.

If you’re content with the limited offerings available on Apple devices and the exorbitant prices you have to pay to get access to them then by all means continue to fund that nightmare company and it’s war on consumers.

  • Despite having health insurance I’ve lost my life savings three times now to medically necessary surgery that my insurance only covered a portion of. Insurance that cost a quarter of my income.

When I was in my twenties, I got a hernia. 16k out of pocket.

A bit later, a chair at work collapsed and I broke my wrist, workers comp paid for everything treatment wise including physical therapy, my wrist is still messed up, but workers comp showed me that actual medical care IS possible.

In my thirties, I broke both my ankles when I was knocked down some stairs on the way to catch a bus to work. I went to work, worked 6 hours on broken ankles and then took a bus to the hospital that decided my insurance would only cover one, and the other one was going to be mostly out of pocket. 12k out of pocket.

and then had a polyp on my vocal cord. Health insurance covered about 2000 of that leaving me with an 8k bill. My supplemental Aflac insurance covered the cost of a taxi (up to 40 dollars one way!) to the doctor for follow up appointments.

Now I can’t walk right, can’t lift shit, and can barely afford insurance, I need a follow up surgery for my hernia and I’m better off losing my job and going on medicaid than trying to keep a job and pay for it myself.

    I’ll be renting forever
