Oh, I understand the tactics being used. I was implying that person c was obviously stalking person a and pounced the moment they did something less than perfect.
My guess is there isn’t anything of substance, so person c’s sensitivity got amplified with time and obsessing over whatever is going on, leading them to overreact. But, not c has to double down if they want any chance of being taken seriously if a significant cause to defederate occurs.
I got around 5 links deep for each of the links in the admin’s post, and fuck if I know. There was an argumentative user, but they were articulate and thoughtful. Not dropping slurs or wasting space nonsense, but still bordering on “edgy”. The person pushing the defederation appeared to be bullying them and on a power trip.
It was embarrassing. That’s all I took away. (My opinion can change if someone digs through the shitpiles of nothingness to pull up some actual naughty posts, but that’s not going to be me.)

If there was some over the top racist rant, I sure didn’t see it. And the admin pushing for the defederation sounds so bizarre. Bizarre is the best word I could come up with because “petty” makes me think it was like high school politics. This is closer to a grade school sandbox argument.
The worst I saw was “defedfags” and it was used in a way that was meant to highlight how they never said anything offensive. Like saying, “If you thought what I said before was offensive, let’s see how you respond to something intended to be negative.”
The crazy thing is that the decision is being made because the admin just liked a post. It’s not even because of the post content - which has nothing controversial and appeared maybe 8 times in my Lemmy/kbin feed yesterday.

No major “supported for 1 generation by the manufacturer then forgotten” hardware gimmicks (if this were a just universe, the guy that suggested the Bixby button would be reassigned to manually unclogging toilets with his hands), no notch (oh Apple, you think we didn’t look at the ‘functional notch’ and start betting on how long before that’s gone?), a satin feeling back and shiny bevel made of plastic (it flexes, doesn’t bend, and who gives a shit when it’s in a case), thin but not so much so that you have to worry about sanding 0.00001 mm off the battery to fit it (0.5mm thicker and 4 more hours of screen on time? Puhlease. My college laptop weight 10 pounds and I took it everywhere. Load up those energon cubes).
You wanna play around with the dimensions and cameras and add a retractable feline flossing utensil? Fine. The phone everyone wants already 99% exists. It’s maddening!
Yeah, I assume I’ll be wrestling with package managers regardless (I remember YAST having it’s own thing that didn’t always play nice with others), and supposedly Ubuntu was looking to move away from snaps, so another major factor that will be changing soon.
But Arch? I dunno, man. Younger me used to update shit daily and read changelogs, but current me lets stuff go a few months. I;m not sure that attitude or my level of comfort are quite at Arch levels. I’ll give it another look, though. Or maybe I’ll just go FreeBSD to spite everyone and embrace my masochism!
Yeah, but I’ve already seen a few developers state they were dropping Fedora testing of their programs because they feel like they’re doing Red Hat’s work for free. And I don’t even follow Linux that closely.
Mint is very easy to transition to from Windows and pretty stable. I’ve probably used that the most in the last 5 years and my only gripe is that it’s a little out of date (but that adds to the stability) and configuring sound has been a bit annoying.
I was considering it, but I’ve done little auditions of Ubuntu over the last 10 years and something doesn’t feel right. It was awesome in the late '00s, but it hasn’t clicked with me since. Maybe it was the 1-2 pow of trying to make a phone OS and then the phone-looking launcher.
Thanks for the tip, though. I’ll give it a go if my next candidate gets too messy. (Yes, it’s definitely the distros’ fault, not mine. Okay, maybe 20% mine. Or 95%. Something like that.)
Not gonna lie, that did make me feel like a badass. Plus, there was the added surprise challenge of finding half the online help was in German.
And just like that, my attempt at Linux on the desktop (take #4123), which was going to be Fedora, is back in flux. I don’t want to start investing time into a learning project in major transition and an uncertain future.
Ironically, I’m looking again at OpenSUSE, which I had left back during the SuSE-> OpenSUSE period. (You can tell I’m OG because I’m one of the few that uses the correct capitalization! haha)
Yup, I could see Reddit noticing a large number of comment edits and bumping that timeout higher.
Also, many users probably don’t know what forks are and might just run the first version of PDS they see, see that it isn’t “working”, and give up or wait for an update that never comes. The userscript is easier to understand because it visually performs the same actions a person would take to edit comments. And it’s more fun to watch than PDS’s progress bar. :)

Also, as someone that has been engaging with many protestors (users and mods, across several platforms), I have heard exactly ZERO badmouthing of regular Reddit employees. Despite what spez would have you think, everyone understands the difficult place you’re being put in.
One thing I wanted to point out is that spez appeared to be concerned for his employees’ safety, yet downplayed the protest by stating that only 1,000 subreddits went dark, when the real number was over 8,000. The entire site has been besieged and he wants you to think it’s a little kerfuffle. Shouldn’t he tell you the real magnitude of the protest is he really cared for your safety?
If you can help in any way, that’s great, but don’t jeopardize your job. The only reason I mention that is because there will almost certainly be at least one more round of layoffs to make the company seem more profitable to investors.
Regardless of you position on all this hub-bub, get your resume updated and start looking for greener pastures. That place (Reddit HQ) will be getting toxic. Toxic now? No, no, no. As the IPO approaches, management will start to squeeze. They know they are hated and significant long-term damage has been done, so they’ll likely cash out right away. That means boost every visible metric as much as possible. They will already be checked out and their interest in the employees’ health and safety will be near nonexistent.

There are a couple ways to handle this.
This happens with PowerDeleteSuite’s main version, but one of the forks has a 5 sec pause between deletes that does work. It’s very slow (~1000 comments edited in 2 hours), but works reliably.

This userscript will manually overwrite comments manually. You go to your comments page, scroll until there are no more comments to load, and run it. It’ll go 1 by 1 - edit, new text entered, save, 3 sec pause. By default the replacement text is a link to the script, but you can just edit that to be whatever you want (and you should edit it to make it harder for Reddit to batch restore).

Note 1: Method #2 doesn’t use the API, so should still work on July 1. PDS does use the API, so might not.
Note 2: Both methods allow you to continue to use the browser in another tab or window (at least in Firefox). Some browsers and extensions will suspend or unload tabs if they haven’t been viewed in a while, so best policy is to do this in a separate window.
Note 3: The default PowerDelete Suite should be fine for exclusively deleting comments if you run it several times. Just keep running it until nothing shows up under comments. To be sure, once your comments are all gone, wait an hour, and check again. If anything remains, use method #2.

The Surface might be too bare bones for some, but $610 is decent. (Also, there are several “generations” in the store now. This is the middle, non-ARM flavor with 11th Gen Intel. The Surface 9 has the current generation.)
The Lenovo is a much bigger discount and better specs, but I’ve heard worse stuff about the Lenovo support. Apparently Lenovo’s consumer support and build quality is very different from the business offerings.

I’m generally a Windows user, but on the verge of doing a trial run of Fedora Silverblue (just need to find the time). It sounds like a great solution to my… complicated… history with Linux.
I’ve installed Linux dozens of times going back to the 90s (LinuxPPC anyone? Yellow Dog?), and I keep going back to Windows because I tweak everything until it breaks. Then I have no idea how I got to that point, but no time to troubleshoot. Easily being able to get back to a stable system that isn’t a fresh install sounds great.
Generally, if someone’s being a total asshole so severely that they have to be yeeted with several thousand other unaware bystanders, I expect to see a bunch of examples within the first… 2, maybe 3, links.
If someone can point me to a concise list of examples (actual data), I find it more disturbing that an admin on another server can yeet my account because they make noise on a discord server.I mean, yes, federating is a feature, but why even offer the ability to enroll users? Maybe for a group of friends, or something, but just rando users is nothing but a liability to everyone involved.
