  • SafeRent was a giant piece of shit before “AI”. I tried to rent a place 15 years ago that used them. The report returned several serious felonies committed over years by another person with an only vaguely similar name who lived in a state I had never even visited.

The leasing office people admitted that the report was transparently bogus, but they still had orders to deny all housing to negative reports.

My only recourse at the time was to lock my record so they won’t issue reports in my name at all. I now ask right up front who a renter uses for screening and they get a vigorous ‘nope’ if they use SafeRent.

    Fsck SafeRent!

  • I’m living on an old farm with lots of junk.

So naturally I am building an 8 foot tall wind-driven kinetic sculpture of a Wendigo.

I bought a welder and a cutoff saw. All the materials are retrieved from the trash gully that every respectable high desert property must have.

It’s a form of cope and even ritual magic for me. Embody the spirit of hoarding and greed so it is vulnerable and can be imprisoned, that sort of vibe.

It will take all winter to finish it. The rebar armature is flexible and bobs in the wind. I will add sun bleached oak branches to give it flesh.

  • I recommend you try gaffer tape instead of duct tape.

    Advantages:

    • Remains flexible and removable forever.
    • Looks nicer, a cool matte black or manynother colors.

Where I get off making this recommendation:

I needed a light-excluding bellows for a photographic project. I made one using black illustration stock and gaffer tape. It worked extremely well on the first version and held up to hundreds of cycles of extension/compression. My application was sensitive to pinhole light leakage and there was none.

It would have lasted longer but that was the end of that project.

My two cents. I love DIY stuff!

  • You don’t have to get a smart tv at all. TVs do not need to be smart. If you search ‘business monitor’, you will find large quality displays such as used for corporate signage. The one issue is they often have only a few inputs, but that is easily addressed and worth it to avoid the completely unnecessary hassle of a TV too smart for your own good.

    My two cents

  • Back when Perl was the language of choice for bioinformatics, I found a huge performance boost pre-processing large (~1Tb) text files using built in unix tools like sed and awk with regex. So while it might take me a full hour to peck out the correct incantation, the task would then run in an hour, compared to four hours or more for the same task using Perl.

    So many pipes…

  • It’s great as a mental prosthetic. When I am tackling a new complex topic like say a new cloud platform I’m learning, i can test my understanding of the implications of a change to the console settings. I tell it what i think and ask it to check my understanding. Really speeds up my learning, but I don’t rely on it exclusively. I will write my own dang emails, thank you.
