Hey there, friend :)

I just wanted to mention to you directly that you are a human being and you have choices here.

First acknowledging that you do need to stay employed of course and I don’t blame you, as the worker, for helping Reddit during this moment. But there are these few moments each day at your work where you can make small, deliberate decisions on behalf of your fellow human beings over hollow corporate furtherance.

Just do a bit less each day. Forget to send an email here and there. Copy the wrong “Debbie” or “Todd” in that email that you do send - honest mistake. Forget to ban that mod you are asked to ban, or forget one in the group. If you’re feeling bold, get off of your work machine and reach out to those mods on a dummy account with a heads up.

Again, not your fault as an individual either in a broken system, but you probably have small opportunities every day to help the world (and hurt Reddit a bit). Embrace those opportunities.

We believe in you.

Why do you people care about Reddit so much? Let them do their thing. Let’s just enjoy what we have here.

This. I was a redditor for 14 years. I was a moderator, I ran reddit meetups in Philly and Jersey. I have a badge on my profile for working with one of the admins 13 years ago to add /r/friends/comments, for use in a 3rd party app for Ubuntu (the kind that will now be dying). I was there for the Digg migration, Secret Santa, Global Reddit Meetup Days, Reddit Gold, Reddit Mold, Team Periwinkle, I was Snapped. I run a subreddit, different_sob_story, that was literally a meta subreddit about bad reddit posts.

Did I have a reddit addiction? Yeah, probably. But it was a large background in my life, for 14 years. If there’s a famous reddit moment, I was probably there for it. I had 2 real life relationships, because of reddit. I made a good chunk of my real life friends through reddit. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

So yeah, it’s a lot. And some redditors will get over it quicker than others. Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me.

Probably because I spent 12+ years actively promoting Reddit to people, talking about various things I’ve read, interesting subreddits, drama all the way from unidan, cumbox, Boston bombing, original r/place, and so much more.

I was on Reddit starting around 2008 or so, before it was quite popular and a lot more wild. so ya know, it’s like saying goodbye to an old friend really, but all things pass eventually. Im excited to see what’s next.

I’d say majority of the people on here are going to go back to reddit and this is just virtue signaling honestly
I already see a lot of these “lemmy says fuck you” on reddit

I’m still going back from time to time to promote fediverse and participate in the protest posts. I’m still spending more time here though.

I can see some going back; Lemmy isn’t a perfect replacement for Reddit despite what some say.

I’m honestly on here more so that I have something when Baconreader dies as I’m not going to use the official app; but I’m still going to use Reddit.

Why is this posted to Technology? This has nothing to do with Technology, and belongs in one of the many reddit threads or communities that already exist.

Or just start lining up work elsewhere. I’m not convinced we need sabotage at this point, but Reddit probably isn’t going to get better for users or employees.

Also, you should probably avoid trash-talking Reddit when interviewing. I hear potential employers hate that.

Interviewers don’t mind you describing flaws in a company to explain why you left, if those flaws are real flaws. What they hate is when a candidate blames their failings on the company rather than honestly identify and take responsibility for their own shortcomings.

What that means is that if you’re going to say something bad about a former employer, keep it brief, stick to factual, provable things with minimal emotive content, and describe how that meant they’re a bad fit for you. If you can describe a way your employer did things badly, explain why you weren’t in a position to change it, and then describe a better way that you wish they’d do and that happens to line up with how your potential new employer does do things, that can be a good way to show you’ll fit in because you agree with their practices or management style or whatever it is.

So worded a bit more harshly, mention past problems if necessary but make it look like you’ll cover for the potential employer when they fuck up, too.

Politeness is necessary for human interaction, but let’s not sugarcoat it.

It’s more, point out past employers’ flaws where it doesn’t look like an excuse for your own, or where you can use it to show that the reasons you left that employer totally won’t apply here because this place is better in exactly the ways you’re looking for.

I keep saying I think it’s going to go the facebook route. I don’t think we’re going to see them change on this, I think we’re going to see a slow gradual death of a social media space. No one can pinpoint when Facebook became less cool, but everyone agrees it’s not cool like it was in the early 2010s/late 2000s. People will follow the content, when content stops being as good on Reddit people will go elsewhere.

All we need to do is keep the communities going and have fun content.

Indeed. I don’t think sabotage is really the best thing that someone inside Reddit could be doing, anyway. Maybe try suggesting “hey, are we the baddies?” Now and then instead.

I’d add “Update your resume” and start looking because if Reddit holds to the pattern of enschittification, then layoffs are coming. Pointless, stupid layoffs that don’t care how important your job is.

As much as I dislike what’s going on - sabotaging ones work has next to 0 impact on the company scheme of things. All it does is, give you a bad exit once you leave - or if you keep it up long enough get fired.

worst case ending up with a bad reputation in the long run, since sind companies do ask previous employers for feedback. sometimes without your “ok”.

I would not recommend sabotaging your work an future

Giving an interview to press, bloggers, podcasters and stating the facts and truth afterwards… or something in that line is likely more beneficial for everyone and yourself.

I you decide it’s time to leave - regardless of reasons - try a clean exit for your own good. If you have been mistreated at work, seek legal advice.

    (Addressing Reddit employees…)

Also, as someone that has been engaging with many protestors (users and mods, across several platforms), I have heard exactly ZERO badmouthing of regular Reddit employees. Despite what spez would have you think, everyone understands the difficult place you’re being put in.

One thing I wanted to point out is that spez appeared to be concerned for his employees’ safety, yet downplayed the protest by stating that only 1,000 subreddits went dark, when the real number was over 8,000. The entire site has been besieged and he wants you to think it’s a little kerfuffle. Shouldn’t he tell you the real magnitude of the protest is he really cared for your safety?

If you can help in any way, that’s great, but don’t jeopardize your job. The only reason I mention that is because there will almost certainly be at least one more round of layoffs to make the company seem more profitable to investors.

Regardless of you position on all this hub-bub, get your resume updated and start looking for greener pastures. That place (Reddit HQ) will be getting toxic. Toxic now? No, no, no. As the IPO approaches, management will start to squeeze. They know they are hated and significant long-term damage has been done, so they’ll likely cash out right away. That means boost every visible metric as much as possible. They will already be checked out and their interest in the employees’ health and safety will be near nonexistent.

    Good luck in there!

If you’re browsing this and work for reddit, I’m sorry you’re caught up in all this bullshit. I love you guys and the work you’ve done but hate what’s coming from the ceo amd other executives through inaction.

Anyone working on reddit might benefit from contacting some of the people that used to work on twitter, just so that they are prepared for what’s to come y´know.
I mean spez already said he admires Elon Musk’s directive of twitter, it doesn’t take much to know that its going to turn into a very shitty place to work for if it hasn’t reached that point yet.
