We do have one but it doesn’t have as much attention even from people on this instance, I included. I understand the idea of using Lemmy.ml community is to spread the world and show reactionaries that there’s a world beyond their tiny window which is not only encompassed by the West. But at the same time is tiring, I like reading the news, that’s how I like to start my morning, but I don’t want to get every day into the same fights because I’m just voicing my opinion, and having to argue against the same arguments over and over again: “China/X country which is bad source so the source is lying”, “capitalist apologia”, “whataboutism”, etc. I’m just not liking it, I love the fact that Lemmy is growing, but it has become a reactionary cesspool. I just would like it very much more if I could just go read the news and either get a true insight or joke with my comrades, and if I feel like it, I go to Lemmy.ml to argue with reactionaries.

Does anyone feel like me? Maybe we could get a bot that cross posts from there to here so that we can get the news without the trash and have it be more active?

Most online spaces will be like that because most engagement comes from a small amount of people. And that small amount of people are disproportionately terminally online and disconnected from the real world.

Oh that’s a problem every online space has to manage with, but purging those who are most terminally online here will probably turn our spaces into ghost towns. So it’s best to seed materialism into those terminally online. So basically for combating the army of terminally online libs, you need an equal amount of terminally online comies. An idiotic and baffling proposition, but I think this might really be the only way to counter the bullshit we find on other instances.

I’m not suggesting kicking those people out. I am just saying that that’s why online spaces tend to have very bad takes as a whole.

I completely agree with you, reading the news is a crucial part of my day and I need more like-minded people to share and discuss it with.

I really liked those megathread posts that were around for a bit but I didn’t get a chance to contribute cause I’m extremely disorganized.

I will definitely make a concerted effort to post and comment in c/worldnews if that is the plan. I often come across articles that I don’t see shared on here that would be interesting to comrades. Really big fan of this post, thanks.

Nice to know, I just think that a bot would help to at least give it some traction so that people start using it more.

I agree with this. I’m fact, just this morning, I unsubscribed from the main one because I realised I was getting too caught up in silly drama. As you plan, I’ll go over there now and again. But for now, I need to touch some grass or pebbles or the broken bits of glass next to a bus stop outside a nightclub – anything to get outdoors, basically.

I will also take this opportunity to say I appreciate it when you say, to paraphrase, ‘this is worldnews and you have posted boring US news and nobody cares’.

Did you seen lemmy “politics” community recently? it’s 90% some US tribal politics or internal state shit and it’s full of libs masturbating themselves to this distasteful meaningless theatre.

I like the idea of a bot but do we want all the trash posts they have from US propaganda sources? I mean do we want our news feed filled with CNN/Fox News/ABC/CBS/NBC/Yahoo anti-communist, pro-US-imperialist VOA nonsense?

If we do have a bot I’d almost want it set to only scrape posts from certain sources. RT is fine most of the time (they play both sides so they host reactionaries with quite some takes sometimes but are mostly acceptable), CGTN, Xinhua are fine as well. Various more blog source type places such as moonofalabama, multipolarista, greyzone, etc. Even AP and to a degree Reuters aren’t as seething on fire about it as the non-wire services (though to be clear both are compromised directly by NATO intelligence and full of bootlickers of empire).

I mean, a lot of times news from that sources is just some X topic that is not necessary pro-imperialism, and it’s not much work to delete whatever is pure trash, people can report it and moderators too. I check that community every single morning so I literally could do that if it’s pure trash, or we could all laugh in the comments, too.

I’d say Dong Cong San, Xinhua, Granma and a few other news sources but we should stick only to ones from socialist countries. I would very much like that but it should be avoided to have any news publications from private sources or non-socialist government publications.

Did you mean that we should only have news from socialist countries?

I agree we should have such news but I think some Western sources will be okay. If it’s between all us, we can go into it to argue about which parts might be true and which parts outright lies.

Yes all the other news communities are borderline unusable. For socialist news discussion, Hexbear’s news megathread is very good, but its news community is a bit inactive in comparison. For a good news community, you need actually engaging discussion, so I would caution against cross-posting for the sake of boosting activity. You will probably just end up with a bunch of barely upvoted posts.

I definitely second that, specially if it avoids the usual Northern obsessions like the USA electoralism, Ukraine war and the “Free World” to focus more on the rest of the world in depth. If I may propose some suggestions, there could be a rule where every post needs to have some brief summary/preface of the article written by the poster to make it easier to moderate out liberal spam and unreliable headlines. Right now c/GenZedong is acting as the de facto world news.

I don’t know how I feel about that rule at least in the beginning since what’s more important is to have more activity and people may be put off because of that. You’re right about genzedong acting like worldnews, which makes no sense.

Yeah, might not be a good immediate strict rule but some people over there already seems to be doing something like that either with a comment or a quote. Even as an informal tradition it still helps understand how a Washington Post article is useful despite its Washingtonianness, for instance, and drive discussion. The old reddit analogue kinda focused way too much on bombarding you with headlines but I personally am more in favour of deeper discussions on each thread.

Crosspost bot is a great idea. I’ve manually crossposted before just because I wanted to show a particular news story to a broader audience.

Yeah, also we could get a lot of news without the hassle of needing to manually post them, and for example comrades like Yogthos could keep on posting over Lemmy.ml and we could get their news still.

I pretty much only post news on Lemmygrad communities so I don’t have to deal with reactionaries, which I’m also not online enough take the time to interact with. I do agree that we should build our communities and then crosspost to others to help spread info, but I’ll rely on others for that 😅

I don’t know as I’m still learning Lemmy. I do see reactionaries a lot here as well but just keep from engaging and stick more to lurking and upvoting quality content instead.
